Lost in the shuffle of the Conan-Leno feud is the most important American political story since the last Presidential election. Ted Kennedy’s seat, TED KENNEDY’S SEAT, is on its way to going to a Republican. This means, among many other implications, no more super majority.Throw all the big plans out the window.
It was easy to dismiss the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races as mere aberrations and not mandates on the President’s job performance. This isn’t as easy. This is Ted Kennedy’s seat in arguably the most liberal state in the Union. Even a slight victory is a bad sign.
The President and his staffers continually talk about him thinking 4 steps ahead of everyone. That’s part of the problem. Instead of making sure he can actually make that first, second, and third step, he’s thinking about the 4th step. George W. Bush won two terms because he never considered anything past the first step, and as maddening as that is, it works. The American people want everything now and if they aren’t satisfied in any meaningful way they will not let it slide. If I’m a sitting Democratic U.S senator, I’m very worried about my job right now.
I hope I’m wrong about all of this. I really do.
If you know someone in Massachusetts, please make sure they vote Tuesday.
